A960E AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION / TRANSAXLE: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY: INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a vernier caliper and a straightedge, measure dimension A between the transmission contact surface of the engine *1 and the converter contact surface of the drive plate *2. (#)
NOTICE:
Make sure to deduct the thickness of the straightedge.
(b) Aligning the matchmarks on the transmission case and torque converter clutch, engage the splines of the input shaft and turbine runner.

(c) Engage the splines of the stator shaft and stator while turning the torque converter clutch.

NOTICE:
Do not damage the oil seal.
HINT
Turn the torque converter clutch approximately 180°.
(d) Turn the torque converter clutch and align the matchmarks on the torque converter clutch and transmission case to engage the key of the oil pump drive gear into the slot on the torque converter clutch.

NOTICE:
Do not push on the torque converter when aligning the matchmarks.
(e) Using a vernier caliper and a straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration and check that B is greater than A (measured in step (#)).
Standard:
A + 1 mm (0.0393 in.) or more
2. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH
(a) Install the transmission control shaft lever RH to the park/neutral start switch assembly with the nut and washer.

Torque : 16 Nm (163 kgf-cm, 12 ft-lbf)
3. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR
(a) Install the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator to the automatic transmission assembly with the 4 bolts.
Torque : 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf)
4. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
(a) Confirm that the 2 knock pins are on the transmission contact surface of the engine block before transmission installation.
(b) Apply clutch spline grease to the circumference of the crankshaft contact surface with the torque converter centerpiece.
Clutch spline grease:
Toyota Genuine Clutch Spline Grease or equivalent
Maximum spread:
About 1 g (0.0353 oz.)

(c) Install the automatic transmission assembly to the engine with the 9 bolts.

Bolts A and B - Torque : 71 Nm (724 kgf-cm, 52 ft-lbf)
Bolt C - Torque : 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf)
NOTICE:
Do not use excess force to pry on the transmission assembly.
HINT
Make sure that the mark is positioned as shown in the illustration.
5. INSTALL WATER BY-PASS HOSE
(a) Tilt down the automatic transmission assembly.
(b) Install the 2 water by-pass hoses to the transmission assembly.

(c) Install the water by-pass hose clamp with the bolt.
Torque : 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbf)
6. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS
(a) Install the wire harness clamps to the automatic transmission assembly with the bolt.

Torque : 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf)
(b) Connect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, and 2 transmission revolution sensor connectors.

HINT
Push up the lever until the claw of the transmission wire connector makes a connection sound.
7. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING MEMBER
(a) Tilt up the automatic transmission assembly.
(b) Install the wire harness to the automatic transmission assembly with the bolt.
Torque : 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf)
(c) Install the rear engine mounting member to the automatic transmission assembly with the 4 nuts.
Torque : 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft-lbf)
(d) Install the rear engine mounting member to the body with the 4 bolts.
Torque : 26 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft-lbf)
8. INSTALL FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY Installation
9. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT
(a) Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt and install the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.

Torque : 41 Nm (418 kgf-cm, 30 ft-lbf)
NOTICE:
Install the black colored bolt first, and then the silver colored 5 bolts.
10. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER
(a) Install the flywheel housing side cover to the engine assembly.
