Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Removal1. Remove the left and right valve cover.
2. Remove the cooling fan.
3. Remove the water pump pulley.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the water pump pulley.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
5. Remove the nuts and the hose support, if equipped.
6. Remove the bolts and position the Power Steering (P/S) pump aside.
7. Remove the nut and position the Air Conditioner (A/C) muffler out of the way.
8. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
9. Drain the engine oil.
10. Remove the bolts.
11. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
14. Remove the bolt and the belt idler pulley.
15. Remove the bolts and the studs, the engine front cover and the gaskets.
- Clean and inspect the front cover and oil pan sealing surfaces.
Installation
Note: If the front cover and gasket are not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing surface cleaned with Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M513392-A.
1. Apply silicone sealer in the locations shown.
- Use Silicone Gasket and Sealant F7AZ-19554-EA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G343-A4.
2. Position the engine front cover and install the bolts and the studs in three stages:
- Stage 1: Tighten numbers one through five to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 2: Tighten numbers six and seven to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 3: Tighten numbers 11 through 15 to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the belt idler and the bolt.
4. Connect the CMP sensor.
5. Raise the vehicle.
6. Tighten the bolts in three stages:
- Stage 1: Tighten to 2 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 2: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 3: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.
7. Install the crankshaft front oil seal.
8. Install the drain plug.
9. Connect the CKP sensor.
10. Reposition the A/C muffler and tighten the nut.
11. Position the power steering pump and install the bolts.
12. Position the hose support and install the nuts (if equipped).
13. Install the crankshaft pulley.
14. Install the water pump pulley and install the bolts.
15. Install the cooling fan.
16. Install the left and right valve cover.
17. Refill the engine crankcase with clean engine oil.
- Use Super Premium SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G.
