Power Locks: Description and Operation

HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS

The hood latch system contains a latch fastened to the body and a secondary latch attached to the hood. The latch is controlled by the hood latch release handle and cable.

The front door entry system contains a latch that is fastened to the inside of the door frame and is controlled by the exterior and interior door handles. The latch contains the door ajar switch and door lock actuator. The front doors are locked/unlocked by the remote transmitter, keyless entry key pad, door lock control switch or door lock cylinder. The door lock control switch is located on the driver and passenger door trim panel switch plate.

The rear door entry system contains a latch that is fastened to the inside of the door frame, controlled by the exterior and interior door handles. The latch contains the door ajar switch and the door lock actuator. The rear doors are locked/unlocked by the remote transmitter, the keyless entry key pad or the door lock control switch. The rear doors have a child safety lock feature, which is a manual lock on the inside of the rear door frame.

The liftgate system contains a latch located on the bottom of the inside frame of the liftgate and includes a door ajar switch. The liftgate latch is controlled by the liftgate lock cylinder or the liftgate release switch. The liftgate window glass latch is mounted on the upper center portion of the liftgate frame and includes the door ajar switch and the control cable. The latches are actuated by the liftgate/1iftgate window glass switch mounted in the license plate housing. The liftgate/liftgate window glass switch will operate only when all the doors are unlocked.

Power Locks
The power lock/unlock feature requests all vehicle doors, including the liftgate, to lock or unlock upon a request from any door lock control switch, keyless entry key pad or remote transmitter. Power locking and unlocking of the doors functions independently of key position, vehicle speed, or transmission position. The vehicle security module activates internal relays to supply the correct power and grounds for the door lock actuators.

The liftgate/liftgate window glass switch operates only when all the doors are unlocked. The keyless entry keypad or remote transmitter will not release the liftgate if the key is in the ON or START position and the transmission is not in PARK.

Power Unlock Inhibit
With the key off, 20 seconds after electrically locked (remote transmitter, keyless entry keypad, door lock control switch locked with door ajar) and all doors are closed, the door lock control switch UNLOCK button will be disabled if this feature is enabled. (The lock function will still operate.)

Deactivating/Activating The Door Lock Control Switch UNLOCK Button Inhibit
This feature is customer-configurable. Steps one through three must be completed within 30 seconds.
1. Turn the key ON, then press UNLOCK three times.
2. Turn the key OFF, then press UNLOCK three times.
3. Turn the key ON.
4. Verify that the horn chirps. This indicates the enable/disable mode is ready to receive program changes.
5. Within five seconds, press the LOCK button twice.

Two horn chirps indicate the system is disabled. Two chirps, followed by the horn sounding, indicate the system is enabled.

Pressing the LOCK button twice again toggles the door lock control switch UNLOCK button inhibit feature state.

Turn the key OFF to exit the enable/disable programming mode.

Auto-lock
The auto-lock feature locks all the doors when all the doors, including the liftgate, are closed, the brake pedal is pressed with the key in the ON position, and vehicle speed then exceeds 8 kph (5 mph) or higher. This feature relocks the doors (if any doors were open) after the brake pedal is pressed, once all the doors are read as closed and vehicle speed exceeds 8 kph (5 mph). Door ajar switches are wired directly to the vehicle security module. The auto-lock feature can be enabled/disabled through module configuration, the ignition switch, and the keyless entry keypad. The auto-lock feature also uses inputs from the key position, the brake pedal position (BPP) switch, and vehicle speed via the universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART)-based protocol (UBP) network.

Auto-lock Enable/Disable - Using the Keyless Entry Keypad
A manual enable/disable mode allows the auto-lock feature to be turned off and on.

To enable or disable auto-lock using the keyless entry keypad:
1. Enter the five-digit permanent entry code into the keyless entry keypad.
2. Within five seconds of entering the code, press and hold the 7/8 button on the keyless entry keypad.
3. Within five seconds of Step 2, and while holding the 7/8 button, press the 3/4 button on the keyless entry keypad and release it.
4. Within five seconds of Step 3, release the 7/8 button on the keyless entry keypad.

If the auto-lock feature is disabled, the horn chirps once. If the auto-lock feature is enabled, the horn chirps once shortly and then sounds a second time, longer if the above sequence is completed.

Auto-lock Enable/Disable - Using the Ignition Switch
Another way to turn the auto-lock off and on is by following this series of steps:
1. Close all the doors.
2. Confirm that the key is OFF.
3. Turn the key from OFF to ON.

4. NOTE: Steps 4 through 7 must be carried out within 30 seconds.

Press the power door lock UNLOCK button three times.

5. Turn the key from ON to OFF.
6. Press the power door lock UNLOCK button three times.
7. Turn the key from OFF to ON.
8. Verify that the horn chirps. This indicates the enable/disable mode is ready to receive program changes.
9. Press the power door lock UNLOCK one time then press LOCK.
10. Verify that the horn chirps one time, indicating the auto-lock/relock feature is disabled. If one chirp is heard, followed by a longer sound of the horn, the auto-lock/relock feature is enabled. Return to Step 9.
11. Turn the key to the OFF position to exit the enable/disable mode. If the auto-lock status has changed, the horn chirps once. If the status has not changed, no horn chirp is heard. Return to Step 1.

Smart Unlock
The smart unlock feature prevents the driver door from locking with the key in the ignition lock cylinder. When the vehicle security module receives a LOCK command from a door lock control switch, and the key is in the ignition lock cylinder with the driver door open, the vehicle security module commands the driver door to UNLOCK.

Remote Transmitter Lock/Unlock Control - Unlock
The remote transmitter feature functions independently of key position, vehicle speed, or transmission position. The remote transmitter feature provides a two-step process for unlocking the doors. The first press of the UNLOCK button requests the vehicle security module to unlock the driver door. Another unlock request, within three seconds of the first requests all doors unlock.

Remote Transmitter Lock/Unlock Control - Lock
The remote transmitter feature requests that all the doors be locked when the LOCK button is pressed. With all doors closed the remote transmitter feature will request one flash of the parking lamps. If any door is ajar, no flash occurs, indicating the doors are locked, but one or more doors are ajar. As soon as all doors are closed, the vehicle will provide the one flash of the parking lamps. If two presses of the lock button are received within three seconds, the horn chirps once and the parking lamps flash twice to indicate that all the doors are closed and locked. If any door is ajar when the second lock request is received within three seconds of the first, the remote transmitter feature requests the horn chirp twice without flashing the parking lamps to indicate it locked all the doors but one or more doors are ajar. When the key is in the ON or START position, no parking lamp flashes or horn chirp confirmations occur.

Panic Alarm
The panic alarm feature controls activation of the panic alarm, providing audible and visual alarms which are evident from the exterior of the vehicle. The panic alarm feature requests that the parking lamps are flashed and the horn sounds until deactivation. These occur simultaneously. Activation of the panic alarm is accomplished by pressing the PANIC button on a remote transmitter whenever the key is in the OFF or ACC position. At all other times this feature is disabled. Deactivation of an active PANIC alarm is accomplished by: 1) a second press of the remote transmitter PANIC button, 2) the key is switched from the OFF or ACC position or; 3) a period of 2.75 minutes has elapsed since the initial activation.

Keyless Entry Keypad
The keyless entry keypad, located on the exterior of the driver door, allows vehicle access without a key or remote transmitter. The keyless entry keypad feature:
- locks all doors, arms the perimeter anti-theft and inhibits the door lock control switch UNLOCK capability after 20 seconds (if the inhibit feature is enabled).
- unlocks only the driver door.
- unlocks all doors.
- releases the liftgate glass.
- enables/disables auto-locking.

The keypad feature functions independently of key position, vehicle speed, or transmission position. When a keypad button is pressed, the buttons illuminate to provide better visibility. If the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons are pressed or five seconds have elapsed since the last button press, the illumination is turned off.

Each vehicle equipped with a keyless entry keypad is programmed with a five-digit entry code. This code is provided to the customer through a wallet card in the Owner Literature package. In addition, this code is available through a diagnostic tool and is also printed on the vehicle security module label. When entering codes, each digit must be entered within five seconds of the previous entry.

Programming/Erasing Personal Codes
A unique personal five-digit code can be programmed by following these steps:
1. Enter the factory set five-digit code (the keypad illuminates when pressed).
2. Press and release 1/2 within five seconds of Step 1 to activate the programming mode.
3. Enter the unique five-digit code.

The personal code does not over-write the permanent factory set code. Either code can be used to access the vehicle. If a second personal code is programmed, it will simply overwrite the previous personal code. To erase a personal code, carry out the following procedure:
4. Enter factory set five-digit code.
5. Press and release 1/2 within five seconds of Step 1.
6. Press and hold 1/2 for two seconds.

The system now responds only to the factory set code.

Anti-Scan Feature
To provide added security, the keypad is disabled for one minute after 35 button presses without a valid entry code being entered. The keyless entry keypad flashes during this one-minute mode with all functionality disabled except for 7/8 and 9/0 still being allowed to lock the vehicle.

Anti-Scan turns off after one minute of inactivity of the keyless entry keypad.

Unlocking the Doors with the Keyless Entry Keypad System
To unlock the driver door, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (each digit must be pressed within five seconds of the prior digit). The interior lamps will illuminate.

To unlock all doors, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (driver door unlocks) and press the 3/4 control within five seconds.

Locking the Doors with the Keyless Entry Keypad System
It is not necessary to enter the factory set or personal code prior to locking all doors. To lock all doors, press the 7/8 and 9/0 controls at the same time with the driver door closed.
