Parking Brake System: Service and Repair
Parking Brake1. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
2. If installing new parking brake shoes only, remove the rear disc brake.
3. Relieve the parking brake cable tension
1 Pull down on the intermediate cable at the cable union until the parking brake control sector rotates to its stop.
2 Insert a 4 mm (5/32 inch) retainer.
4. Remove the components in the following order:
1 Spring
2 Spring
3 Adjuster
4 Retainer
5 NOTE: Install new parking brake shoes if the linings have worn to within 1.0 mm (0.04 inch) of the shoe.

5. Remove the components in the order indicated in the illustration and table.
6. NOTE: Before installation, lubricate the parking brake shoes at the point where they contact the brake disc shield using silicone grease.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Use the Brake Adjusting Gauge to measure the inside diameter of the drum position of the rear brake disc. Adjust the parking brake shoe clearance of 1.07 mm (0.042 inch) less than the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear brake disc.
^ Make sure that the parking brake shoes are correctly centered and measure across the center point.
^ Rotate the parking brake shoe adjuster wheel to achieve the correct parking brake shoe-to-brake disc.
Item 1 and 2: Parking Brake Control and Front Parking Brake Cable Removal Note
1. Remove the cowl side trim panel.
2. Relieve the parking brake cable tension.
1 Pull down on the intermediate cable at the cable union until the parking brake control sector rotates to its stop.
2 Insert a 4 mm (5/32 inch) retainer.
3. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover.
4. Remove the parking brake release bracket.
5. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the bulkhead harness connector.
6. Remove the screw and position the bracket anti bulkhead harness connector aside.
7. Remove the bolts and remove the parking brake control.
8. Bend the take-up spool tab upward.
9. Remove the front cable and conduit from the parking brake control.
^ Compress the tabs.
^ Remove the cable and conduit from the parking brake control.
10. Remove the front parking brake cable and conduit from the body bracket.
11. Disconnect the front parking brake cable and conduit from the intermediate cable.
Item 3: Intermediate Parking Brake Cable Removal Note
1. Relieve the parking brake cable tension.
1 Pull down on the intermediate cable at the cable union until the parking brake control sector rotates to its stop.
2 Insert a 4 mm (5/32 inch) retainer.
2. Disconnect the front parking brake cable and conduit at the locating hole end of the connector.
3. NOTE: The equalizer cannot be removed from the intermediate parking brake cable and conduit.
Remove the LH and RH parking brake cable and conduit from the parking brake cable equalizer.
Item 5 and 6: Rear Parking Brake Cable (LH) and (RH) Removal Note
1. Unclip the parking brake cable end from the parking brake lever.
2. Compress the clip and release the parking brake cable from the rear disc brake caliper anchor plate.
3. Remove the bolt and clip from the frame crossmember.
4. Remove the parking brake cables from the frame brackets.
5. Rotate the rear parking brake cable out of the parking brake cable and conduit wire form retainer.
