Removal and Installation

All vehicles

1. CAUTION: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the rear jack storage area. Failure to do so can result in the unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

4WD vehicles

2. Index the driveshaft flange and the pinion flange.

3. Index the driveshaft slip yoke and the transmission extension housing.

4. Remove and discard the four driveshaft flange bolts.

5. CAUTION: The driveshaft flange fits tightly on the pinion flange pilot. Never hammer on the driveshaft or any of its components to disconnect the driveshaft from the pinion flange. Pry only in the area shown, with a suitable tool, to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the pinion flange.

Using a suitable tool as shown, disconnect the driveshaft flange from the pinion flange.

6. NOTE: Do not rotate the driveshaft when removing the slip yoke from the transmission output shaft.

Remove the driveshaft.
^ Mark the transmission output shaft to the transmission extension housing after removing the driveshaft.

2WD vehicles

7. Index the driveshaft for correct alignment during installation.

8. Remove and discard the three flex-coupler-to-flange nuts and the three flex-coupler-to-flange bolts.

9. Remove and discard the four driveshaft flange bolts.

11. Remove the two driveshaft center bearing bolts, then remove the driveshaft.

Installation

4WD vehicles

1. Align all the index marks and install the driveshaft slip yoke into the transmission extension housing.

2. CAUTION: The driveshaft flange fits tightly on the pinion flange pilot. To make sure that the driveshaft flange seat squarely on the pinion flange pilot, tighten the driveshaft flange bolts evenly in a cross pattern.

CAUTION: If new driveshaft flange bolts are not available, coat the threads of the original driveshaft flange bolts with Threadlock and Sealer.

Align the index marks and install the driveshaft flange and the driveshaft flange bolts.
^ Tighten to 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs.).

2WD vehicles

3. CAUTION: If new driveshaft center bearing bolts are not available, coat the threads of the original driveshaft center bearing bolts with Threadlock and Sealer.

Position the driveshaft center bearing and hand-tighten the two new driveshaft center bearing bolts until the driveshaft is mounted to the flanges.
^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).

4. CAUTION: If new flex-coupler-to-flange bolts and flex-coupler-to-flange nuts are not available, coat the threads of the original flex-coupler-to-flange bolts with Threadlock and Sealer.

Install the three new flex-coupler-to-flange bolts and the three new flex-coupler-to-flange nuts.
^ Tighten to 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.).
