FORD 1983-85 THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-85 LINCOLN TOWN CAR, CONTINENTAL, MARK VII, COUGAR
This bulletin is being published to clarify and revise the diagnostic procedure for testing the electronic day/night mirror to prevent unnecessary mirror replacement.
The diagnostic procedures (see Shop Manual, Volume A - Pages 42-25-1, 2 for Lincoln Town Car and 1985 Shop Manual, Volume B - Part II of II - Pages 42-25- 4, 5 for Mark, Continental, and Thunderbird/Cougar) are revised as follows:
DIAGNOSIS:
Mirror, Electric Day/Night
The following diagnostic procedures must be performed with the shift lever in Park. Ignition Switch in the Run position and the Mirror Switch in the Auto position. Refer to Figures 3 and 4 (Vol. A) and Figures 8 and 9 (Vol. B).
Check mirror operation by covering up the photocell on backside of the mirror case and using a flashlight, shine the light on the photocell window on the lower right half of the mirror control panel.
The mirror should cycle from normal to non-glare. When the light is taken off the photocell and the backside photocell is uncovered, the mirror should return to normal position after a time delay of five to fifteen seconds. If mirror does not operate properly, perform the following procedure:
NOTE: If the backup lamp switch is stuck in the closed position (backup lamps on), the mirror will not function.
1. Check for a blown fuse. If fuse is blown, replace and retest the mirror for correct operation.
2. If fuse is OK, pull "feed" connector from the rear of the mirror.
3. Check if voltage is present between the 640 and 57 circuits at the "feed" harness connector.
4. If no voltage, check across 640 to a known good ground to determine which circuit is open and repair as required.
5. If voltage is present, carefully and securely plug mirror "feed" connector into back of mirror and again check for correct operation.
6. If mirror does not operate correctly, check mirror on bench using an outside power source.
7. Replace mirror if it does not operate properly.
