TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC - AOD - DELAYED 3-4 SHIFTS/TOO SENSITIVE 4-3 SHIFTS

FORD 1983 FORD, T-BIRD EQUIPPED WITH 5.0L AND 5.8L ENGINE

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 MERCURY, LINCOLN, MARK VI, CONTINENTAL, COUGAR EQUIPPED WITH 5.0L AND 5.8L ENGINE

During March 1983, a revised 3-4/4-3 shift pattern was incorporated as a running change for all AOD transmissions. (Refer to TSB 83-10-11, dated May 17, 1983.) Compared to the old design, the new pattern has a later 3-4 upshift and a more sensitive 4-3 downshift. The shift schedule was revised on May 20, 1983 to reduce the 3-4 shift speed and to make the 4-3 downshift less sensitive.
If a 1983 transmission built during the March-April-May period result in a customer concern, it may be updated or revised to current production levels. Verify the transmission build date by the model identification tag attached to the right hand extension housing case bolt. Refer to the Shop Manual Section 17-20 for the location of the build date on the identification tag. First check the throttle linkage adjustment since this alone could be causing the concern. Also, the car should have at least 500 miles (800 km) on the odometer before proceeding with the update. The models involved and the updating procedure are described below.

1. Check the throttle linkage adjustment. If it is not to specification, then adjust the linkage and reevaluate the car. If the problem persists, and the vehicle has been driven more than 500 miles (800 km), proceed with the update.
2. Remove the transmission oil pan and verify that the main controls are stamped with the 1983 running change ID code. If so, then continue.
3. Remove main control assembly from transmission. Refer to the main control valve body removal procedure in Section 17-20 of the Shop Manual. Disassemble the main control by removing the twelve main control assembly bolts and lifting off the separating plate and three circular reinforcing plates. Refer to the main control valve body disassembly procedure in Section 17-20 of the Shop Manual.

4. Disassemble the 3-4 shift valve components by removing the clip, sleeve with plug, 3-4 shift valve, and both springs. See Figure 12 for exploded view.
(The 3-4 TV modulator valve may be left in place, but verify that it is free in the bore.) Also verify that the plug in the sleeve has grooves across the end face (hollow end). If not, then file or grind a small groove in the end face. (This can be done touching the surface of the end face to a grinding wheel to scratch the surface.)
5. Replace the 3-4 shift valve spring (the larger of the two springs) with the revised spring.

6. Reassemble. Refer to Figure 12 for proper reassembly of the shift valve and spring. Refer to the Shop Manual, Section 17-20, for both the valve body reassembly procedure and the valve body installation procedure. Make certain both relief valves and all check balls are in their proper location.
