This article outlines the procedure to service an exhaust moan condition. The procedure includes neutralizing the exhaust system and installing a transmission extension housing damper.
Exhaust System Neutralization
1. Loosen flanges at RH and LH manifolds.
2. Loosen flange at underbody catalyst outlet to muffler inlet.
3. Place a jack (with a board across) at the front of the catalysts and raise the system until the support rods slightly compress against the upper surface of the front hanger rubber insulator.
4. Tighten the RH and LH manifold flanges to 21.7-32.5 N-m (16-24 ft.lbs.). (Check clearances between the engine-to-pipes and body-to-pipes).
5. Remove the jack from under the underbody catalysts.
6. Tighten the flange nuts at the underbody catalyst outlet to muffler inlet to 27-40 N-m (20-30 ft.lbs.), AFTER making certain that the muffler is positioned correctly so that the tail pipe (at the kickup) DOES NOT touch the body or side rail.

Transmission Extension Damper
Position the damper (part number E35Y-4A263-A) on the transmission extension using the three holes already in the extension. Install three (3) bolts (384748-S2) and three (3) nuts (379930-S2). Torque the bolts to 18-35 ft.lbs.) (Figure 10).
