MOON ROOF - SUNSHADE BINDS OR REMAINS CLOSED - UNITS BUILT BEFORE 3/14/83
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 CONTINENTAL
On some 1983 Continental cars equipped with the moon roof option, the sunshade may stick or remain in place when the roof panel is opened. This is caused by one of two conditions; the sunshade, if built before 3/14/83, may be too narrow, or the spring catch may be out of position on the sunshade.
FIGURE 1:
FIGURE 2:
Measure the sunshade (See Figure 1); if too narrow, replace using the following procedure. If sunshade is correct width, adjust the spring catch on the sunshade as shown in Figure 2.
Procedure to Remove/Install Continental Moon Roof Sunshade
Removal:
1. Close moon roof (sliding glass panel assembly).
NOTE: Prior to removing sunshade, remove plastic garnish mouldings (sight shields) and sliding glass panel assembly in accordance with car body shop manual Pages 46-05-01 and 02. Use care not to scratch or damage glass panel assembly.
CAUTION: WHEN REMOVING GLASS PANEL ASSEMBLY, DO NOT USE LIFTERS AS HANDLES AS THEY WILL SPREAD OUTWARD EVENTUALLY CAUSING THE LIFTER PIN ASSEMBLIES TO DISENGAGE FROM THEIR TRACKS, RESULTING IN AN INOPERATIONAL MOON ROOF.
2. With sight shields and glass panel assembly previously removed, pull sunshade full forward.
3. Bow sunshade upward at center disengaging sunshades four (4) tabs ("ears") from their tracks and lift sunshade out through roof opening.
Installation:
1. From outside vehicle, bow sunshade upward at center, position through roof opening and insert all four (4) tabs ("ears") into lower tracks.
CAUTION: SEPARATE TRACKS ARE PROVIDED FOR SLIDING GLASS PANEL ASSEMBLY AND
SUNSHADE. IF SUNSHADE IS INSTALLED IN UPPER TRACK, HIGH GLASS MOVEMENT EFFORTS (BINDING) WILL RESULT AND SUNSHADE MAY RATTLE.
2. Install sliding glass panel assembly in accordance with car body shop manual page 46-05-02.
3. Adjust front and rear of glass panel assembly in accordance with body shop manual pages 46-05-04 and 06.
NOTE: Be sure to torque front adjusting bolts to specification 1.5-3.0 N-m (9-18 in.lbs.)
4. Check for proper moon roof and sunshade operation.
