Power Steering- Unacceptable Effort and Returnability

83ford5 Article No. 83-24-9

STEERING - POWER - EFFORT AND RETURNABILITY

FORD 1983-84 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-84 GRAND MARQUIS, CONTINENTAL, MARK, LINCOLN TOWN CAR

If unacceptable steering effort or slow returnability is reported by the customer on the above car lines, the steering column boot bearing (E2AZ-3517-A) should be checked for sticking, misalignment or improper clamping (over tightened clamp). This condition can be serviced using the following procedure.

Loosen the clamp around the plastic bearing (E2AZ- 3517-A) and make sure that the bearing is seated properly into the groove provided in the rubber dash boot. Lubricate the bearing with Ford Polyethylene Grease (D7AZ-19584-A) and make sure the bearing turns freely. Re-evaluate the concern.
If the concern still exists, remove the bearing from its pocket and slide it away from the boot. If this corrects the concern, replace the bearing.

NOTE: When reassembling the clamp, take care not to overtighten the clamp. Over-tightening might cause bearing distortions and increase steering efforts.
