SHEET METAL - QUARTER - BUCKLED OR OIL CANNING
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1982-83 MARK VI; 1982-84 LINCOLN
A quarter panel buckling and/or oil canning concern may be present on some subject vehicles. The buckle appears at the ten o'clock position of the right wheel opening and at the two o'clock position of the left wheel opening. The buckle may extend up to the horizontal character line of the panel. On some units the buckle will oil can as the body is jounced up and down while driving. When this occurs a boom sound can be heard inside the car. The following steps outline the procedure for servicing this concern.
1. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist.
2. Check to assure all body mount bolts are torqued to 40-54 N-m (30-39 foot pounds). Lower the vehicle to the ground to see if buckle has been affected. If buckle remains, proceed to step number 3.
Figure 1:
3. Refer to Figure 1 and the 1983 Body Shop Manual, Section 47-05, page 13 for body mount identification. Remove number 4, 5 and 6 body mount bolts on the affected side. Be sure to remove the lower rubber absorbers with the number 5 and 6 bolts.
4. Using suitable jack stands to support the rear end of the body, lower the rear axle enough to allow the number 4 body mount upper retainer and absorber to be removed and discarded. Do not remove the number 5 and 6 absorber/retainers from the frame.
Figure 2:
5. Using a new number 4 absorber/retainer assembly (E0AZ-540039-E), rework the rubber absorber as shown in Figure 2. Only the rubber is to be reworked, not the steel retainer.
6. Position the reworked new absorber/retainer assembly on the frame and carefully raise the rear axle making sure that the number 4, 5 and 6 absorber/retainer assemblies are all properly positioned.
7. Install the number 4, 5 and 6 body mount bolts and tighten to 40-54 N-m (30-39 foot pounds).
NOTE: The number 4 body mount bolt has a blue coded washer and no lower rubber absorber. The number 5 and 6 bolts have washers not color coded and do have lower rubber absorbers.

8. In the event that a slight crease or dish is still evident in the sheet metal after the buckle has been removed, the crease can be removed with appropriate body spooning techniques. As this step re-
quires a degree of skill in bumping and spooning, it is suggested a body service technician be used. The area to be spooned is the "shelf" or flat area above the character line as shown in Figure 3. The surface of the spoon which will contact the paint must be polished to prevent damage to the paint when striking the spoon with a hammer. Generally, the exact area to be spooned can be determined by placing the spoon on the shelf and applying downward pressure with the palm of your hand. When the spoon is at the correct position, the sheet metal will visibly flex at the crease or dished area.
