A new front pump gasket was incorporated in May, 1983 on all AOD transmissions. The pump gasket is notched matching a recessed area in the pump body. This will allow transmission fluid to drainback at a higher point into the case, alleviating some transmission pump case leakage concerns. Refer to Figure 15 for a comparison of the new notched front pump gasket and the original design gasket. Refer to Figure 16 for the location of the front pump recessed area.

Figure 17:

The AOD transmission case will also be changed removing the drainback hole in the case casting. Refer to Figure 17 for the location of the case drainback hole. The hole allowed transmission fluid in the pump area to drainback to the oil pan. Instead, the notched gasket will provide a path for the fluid to vent at a higher point into the case.
For service, the transmission service case will be changed to the new level which deletes the drainback hole. The service case is interchangeable for all model years and all AOD applications.

The new notched pump gasket can be used on both type transmission cases. However, the original design gasket cannot be used on the new level case which has the drainback hole deleted since there is no provision for drainback of transmission fluid with this combination of parts.

Service stock with the original design front pump gasket may be used on a case with no drainback hole; modify the gasket as follows:

1. Using the new notched gasket as a template, lay it on top of the original design gasket.
2. Match all feed passages and bolt holes.
3. Trace the notched portion on the original design level gasket.
4. Remove the notched gasket and cut out the portion traced on the original design level gasket.
5. Verify that the modification was done correctly by comparing the modified gasket with the notched gasket that was used as the template.

NOTE: Do not use sealer or adhesive on pump case or gasket-to-pump surface. If the pump gasket notch is blocked, no fluid drainback is possible. This could result in the fluid pressure unseating the front pump O-ring or fluid coming out the filler tube.
