AXLE - REAR - SERVICE REPLACEMENT OF PAST MODEL 8.5" GEAR SETS WITH CURRENT 1983 8.8" GEAR SETS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1982-83 LINCOLN, MARK VI, MERCURY

The 1982 8.5" ring gear (2.73:1 ratio and 3.08:1 ratio) is being replaced with the current 1983 8.8" ring gear. Service interchangeability is affected and some special instruction must be followed to complete the ring gear replacement.

The new (8.8") gear set contains a pinion with a 30-tooth spline in lieu of the 28-tooth used in the 8.5" gear sets. A new companion flange is provided in each kit. Discard the old flange after removal and install the new flange provided.
