Fuel Injectors - Engines Cranks But Won't Start

83ford21 Article No. 83-4-5

CRANKS - WILL NOT START, STALLS (5.0L) ALL C.F.I. CALIBRATIONS

FORD 1983 CROWN VICTORIA WITH 5.0L ENGINE 3 C.F.I.

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 LINCOLN, MARK VI, CONTINENTAL, GRAND MARQUIS WITH 5.0L 3 C.F.I.

If a vehicle cranks but will not start, or stalls while in operation, service by reinstalling the injector wires with heat shrinkable tubing.

1. Locally procure 8" of irradiated polyolefin or polyvinylchloride heat shrinkable tubing from an electronics/electrical sales and service outlet.

NOTE: The requirements for the heat shrink tubing should be as follows: use 3/16" (0.187") tubing, utilize a black or dark color (if possible) and maintain at least a 200~F temperature range.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.

Figure 3:

3. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the carburetor and disconnect the black colored 4-way connector at the carburetor throttle body (Figure 3). Remove excess grease from connector hardshell and wires with air blast.
4. Using the attached illustration as reference, and following normal wiring service techniques, install a 2" piece of heat shrink tubing (procured in Step #1) over the exposed wire strands in each circuit (Figure 3).

CAUTION: REMOVE EACH WIRE/CIRCUIT FROM THE HARDSHELL ONE AT A TIME WHEN PERFORMING THE SERVICE. ALSO, WIPE OFF THE GREASE FROM THE WIRE TERMINAL BEFORE INSTALLATION OF THE 2" PIECE OF HEAT SHRINK TUBING.

NOTE: On Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis/Lincoln Town Car and Mark VI vehicles, the 4-way connector at the carburetor has (two) 14 gage, red wires crimped into (one) terminal in one cavity of the hardshell. It will not be necessary to cover this circuit, as it will be insulated from the other wires on either side of it and there is not ample room in the cavity for both wires and a terminal and added heat shrink tubing.
5. Connect the serviced wiring/connector to the carburetor throttle body connector.
6. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly.
7. Connect the negative battery cable. Check engine for proper operation.
