Front Door Glass - Binding/Groaning Noise

ISSUE: A "groaning" noise from the window regulator during operation may be caused by a binding condition at the regulator. This is caused by irregular wear patterns and burrs on the cam guide tracking surface and roller assembly. The binding condition may not let the window travel to the full-up postion.

ACTION: Install a new roller and cam on each front door window regulator. The new cams are made out of a harder material. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

CAM AND ROLLER - REMOVAL

1. Remove the door armrest, trim panel and watershield.

2. Prop the vent glass and door glass in the full-up position.

3. Disconnect the motor wire connector.

4. Scribe the location of the retaining screw and washer assemblies to aid in re-installation.

5. Remove the glass run lock side retainer. Remove the screw and washer assembly.

6. Remove the vent glass run retainer screw and washer assemblies.

7. Loosen the three (3) division bar assembly attachments:

^ Belt bracket

^ Bottom of door

^ Door "A" frame

8. Remove the equalizer arm bracket assembly. Remove the nut and washer assemblies.

9. Remove the six (6) 1/4" rivets holding the regulator as follows:

a. Use a drift punch to knock out the center pin from each rivet.

b. Using a 1/4" drill, drill out the rivets.

10. Remove and throw away the old cam. Remove the screw and washer assemblies.

11. Lower the window about two (2) inches.

12. Slide the regulator rearward and remove the rear arm guide from the glass bracket "C" channel.

13. Slide the regulator forward. Remove the vent arm guide and the front arm guide from the vent glass bracket and main glass bracket "C" channels.

14. Remove the prop from the vent glass.

15. Remove the vent glass from the door.

16. Using the power window switch, lower the regulator to the lowest window position.

17. Remove the regulator from the vehicle.

NOTE: THE DIVISION BAR CAN BE MOVED ASIDE TO PROVIDE CLEARANCE FOR MOTOR REMOVAL.

18. Using a grinder, remove the roller assembly from the regulator arm, Figure 1.

19. Repeat Steps 1 through 18 on the other side of the vehicle.

CAM AND ROLLER - INSTALLATION

1. Install a new roller assembly, (E8VY-54214A76-A) onto the regulator drive arm. Torque the nut to 5-8 lb.ft., (7-11 N-m), Figure 1.

2. Loosely install the window regulator into the door.

3. Loosely install the door vent glass at the front bottom of the door.

4. Remove the prop from the main glass.

5. Lower the glass about two (2) inches, (50 mm).

6. Install the main glass rear arm guide into the "C" channel.

7. Using the power window switch, raise the window regulator. Slide the regulator forward and install the main glass front arm into the "C" channel.

8. Position the new cam on the regulator arm.

9. Push the glass to the full-up position.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE GLASS IS WITHIN THE DIVISION BAR RUN AND THE REAR DOOR FRAME.

10. Prop the glass in the full-up position.

11. Install the vent glass and prop up.

12. Loosely install two (2) 1/4 inch-20 x 1/2 screw and washer assemblies to position the regulator.

13. Remove main door glass prop.

14. Install the vent arm guide in the vent glass bracket "C" channel.

15. Remove vent glass prop.

16. Position the vent glass to the full-up position.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE REAR EDGE OF THE GLASS IS SET WITHIN THE DIVISION BAR BEFORE MOVING THE GLASS TO THE FULL-UP POSITION.

17. Position the front run retainer into the door. Loosely install the screw and washer assemblies.

18. Insert the glass run into the retainer to the belt.

19. Repeat Steps 17 and 18 for the rear run retainer.

20. With the glass in the full-up position, install the cam screw and washer assemblies. Reset to the scribed marks made during removal.

21. Install the equalizer arm with two (2) nut and washer assemblies. Reset to the scribed marks made during removal.

22. Install six rivets or six 1/4 inch-20 x 1/2 bolts to hold the regulator to the door panel.

23. Loosely assemble the three (3) division bar attachments:

^ Belt bracket

^ Bottom of door

^ Door "A" frame

24. Slowly lower the vent glass and door glass to the full-down position.

25. Adjust the door and vent glass.

26. Cycle the window to check for proper operation.

27. Clean rivets from the bottom of inner door panel.

28. Clean the glass.

29. Install the watershield, trim panel and armrest.

30. Repeat Steps 1 through 29 on the other side of the vehicle.
