Radio Speakers - Inoperative

83ford6 Article No. 83-23-8

RADIO - SPEAKERS - INOPERATIVE

FORD 1983-84 FORD CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-84 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS, LINCOLN TOWN CAR

The subject vehicles may encounter loss of sound on the premium speakers located in the instrument panel and/or door on the Lincoln Town Car, built from June 1, 1983 through September 30,1983 and the Ford/Mercury built from August 1, 1983 through September 30, 1983.

The cause of the above concern may be due to the manner in which the capacitor was mounted to the speaker basket. An incorrect mounting of the capacitor could eventually lead to a short between the capacitor leads and the surrounding sheet metal, thereby causing the speaker to become inoperative in the vehicle. To service an inoperative speaker, the following procedure should be followed:

Remove the retaining screws from the inoperative speaker and raise it from the instrument panel and/or door and see if it begins operating. If it does, remove the original speaker and replace it with a new one.

If the speaker remains inoperative when following the above procedure, it will be necessary to refer to Section 35-30 of the Shop Manual for further speaker diagnosis.
