Seat Back/Cushion - Excessive Gap

SEAT - FRONT - GAP - SEAT CUSHION TO SEAT BACK


LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 LINCOLN TOWN CAR

Some 1983 Lincoln Town Cars may exhibit excessive gap between the front seat cushion and seat back. This gap is caused by a (soft) light density foam rubber. To service this condition, add foam rubber shims to the seat back and seat cushion.

WARNING: USE ONLY FOAM RUBBER THAT MEETS FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD (FMVSS) 302 FLAMMABILITY SPECIFICATIONS.

1. Obtain the following parts:

Foam Rubber - 1-1/2"x12"x12" standard density polyurethane (front seatback applications) (1 per seat).
Foam Rubber - 1"x12"x12" standard density polyurethane (front seat cushion applications) (1 per seat).

WARNING: USE ONLY FOAM RUBBER THAT MEETS FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD (FMVSS) 302 FLAMMABILITY SPECIFICATIONS.

2. Remove the seat and track assembly from the vehicle. Refer to the removal procedures contained in Group 41 of the appropriate 1983 Car Shop
Manual as indicated: 41-01 Manual Seat Tracks 41-08 Power Seat Tracks
3. Remove the seat tracks from the seat cushion.
4. Remove the seat back from the seat cushion. Refer to the removal procedures contained in Group 41-60 of the appropriate 1983 Car Shop Manual.
5. Remove the seat back trim cover as outlined in Section 41-60 of the appropriate 1983 Car Shop Manual.
6. Remove the pad from the seat back frame.

7. Position the 1-1/2"x12"x12" foam rubber shim procured in Step 1 to the seat back frame as shown in Figure 8.
8. Install the seat back pad. Refer to Figure 8.
9. Install the seat back trim cover and headrest as outlined in Section 41-60 of the appropriate 1983 Car Shop Manual.
10. Remove the seat cushion trim cover as outlined in Section 41-60 of the appropriate 1983 Car Shop Manual.
11. Remove the pad from the cushion frame.

12. Position the 1"x12"x12" foam rubber shim procured in Step 1 to the cushion frame as shown in Figure 9.
13. Install the seat cushion pad (Figure 9).
14. Position the seat cushion trim cover to the pad and frame assembly then, hog ring the tie-down wires to the cushion pad.

15. Secure the trim cover to the cushion frame as shown in Figure 10.

NOTE: To ensure proper trim cover fit along the rear of the cushion assembly it is necessary to form a chain of three (3) hog rings at each rear trim cover to cushion frame attachment as shown in Figure 10.
16. Install the seat back to the seat cushion as outlined in Sections 41-30 and 41-60 of the appropriate 1983 Car Shop Manual. Torque the seat back to seat cushion attaching screws to 20-43 N-m (15-32 ft.lbs.).
17. Position the recliner actuator cable to the seat back latch/adjuster assembly then, install the retaining ring as shown in Section 41-30 of the appropriate 1983 Car Shop Manual.
18. Secure the trim covers to the cushion frame in the area of the seat back latch/adjuster. Refer to Section 41-60 of the appropriate 1983 Car Shop Manual.
19. Install the seat tracks to seat cushion frame. Torque the attaching screws to 12-24 N-m (9-18 ft.lbs.).
20. If the seat is equipped with an inertia seat back latch, check the latch for proper operation (sensitivity test) before installing the seat and track assembly in the vehicle as outlined in Section 41-30 of the appropriate 1983 Car Shop Manual.
21. Install the seat and track assembly in the vehicle. Refer to the procedures contained in Group 41 of the appropriate Car Shop Manual as indicated:

22. Check the seat tracks and seat back adjuster (recliner) for proper operation.
