Suspension - Vehicle Leans Left
83ford11 Article No. 83-11-2-SSUSPENSION - REAR - VEHICLE LEANS LEFT
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1980-83 LINCOLN TOWN CAR/MARK VI
This article is published to correct errors in the front spring identification/part no. chart, TSB Article 83-11-2.
Some vehicles may appear to lean left (left side lower than right side). This condition is more evident when the vehicle is viewed from the rear. This condition is serviced by identifying the front spring load/rates and installing appropriate alternate springs with different load values.
NOTE: Proper service for this concern is front spring replacement. DO NOT replace rear springs.
Vehicles will usually be serviced by installing a higher load spring in the LEFT FRONT, which will decrease the height of the right rear and/or installing a lower load spring in the RIGHT FRONT, which will raise the left rear corner of the vehicle.
NOTE: Under no circumstances, except where specified, should springs of unequal rates be used in pairs. For example, the front springs (right front and left front) must have equal spring rates. Similarly, the rear springs (right rear and left rear) must have equal spring rates. Spring pairs, however, will be of different rates front to rear.
1. With the vehicle on a level surface, do the following:
^ Adjust the tire pressure to specification.
^ Set steering wheel straight ahead.
^ Rock vehicle sideways and allow it to settle to neutralize suspension.
2. Measure both rear wheel well openings, lip to ground, at the centerline of the wheel.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the TSB No. and part numbers and location of the shims and replacement springs as listed in the example shown below. Clean an area above or below the door VIN Tag and install the Authorized Modifications decal. Cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
