An insufficient amount of adhesive may have been spray applied to the vinyl roof cover. When an affected vehicle is driven at highway speeds, the front half of the full roof cover (usually between the "A" and "B" pillar area) could separate from the pad and balloon. When a car with this condition is parked after "ballooning" has occurred, the roof cover will "shrink" or go back down to its normal position. However, looseness and/or wrinkles in the affected area may be evident.
1. Carefully remove the windshield moldings.
2. Remove the one screw at the tab of each front roof drip molding and carefully remove each front drip molding. It should not be necessary to remove the rear roof drip moldings.
3. Remove the two cross recess head screws retaining the vinyl roof cover at the upper corners of the windshield opening. The screws, one each side, are normally covered by the molding and may also be covered by sealer. NOTE: These two screws must be removed or the vinyl cover will be damaged when the cover is peeled back.
4. Starting at the bottom of the "A" pillars, slowly and carefully peel the roof cover material up and back - away from the pillars. Do not tear or damage the cover material or the complete cover will require replacement.
5. Use extreme care in continuing to peel the cover away (from front to back) especially along the roof drip rail area. The side roof padding is different from the center roof padding, and can be torn if the cover is pulled away too rapidly. The cover should separate from the urethane center pad without too much difficulty (as this is the problem), but care is still necessary to preclude pad damage. It should not be necessary to peel the cover further than the "B" pillars.
6. Using Ford Motor Company "vinyl roof adhesive" part no. D9AZ-19C525-A or equivalent, apply
adhesive to the urethane pad that is exposed, the side pad area and drip rails and the "A" pillars.
CAUTION: WHETHER BRUSH OR SPRAY APPLICATION IS USED, A MEDIUM EVEN (NO BLOBS) COATING ON THE ADHESIVE IS REQUIRED. APPLY A THINNER COATING IN THE AREA - SIDE TO SIDE - WHERE THE PEELING OF THE COVER STOPPED.
7. With at least two people holding the cover up and away from the adhesive coated roof pad, align the cover side seams and cover and with two other helpers start smoothing the cover down on the pad. Work from back to front and from center to side to avoid wrinkles.
CAUTION: CORRECT ALIGNMENT IS CRITICAL AS PAD DAMAGE MAY OCCUR IF COVER REALIGNMENT IS ATTEMPTED AFTER THE COVER IS RUBBED INTO ADHESIVE COVERED PAD.
8. Replace the two screws that retain the cover in the upper corners of the windshield opening and then the front roof drip moldings and screws and the windshield moldings.
9. Clean up the vinyl roof cover to remove sealer and adhesive.
