Steering Column: Description and Operation
The steering column used on vehicles equipped with air bags is of a modular construction and features easy to service electrical switches. The washer/wiper switch and the combination turn signal/hazard/horn/flash-to-pass/dimmer switch are attached with self-tapping screws.
The vehicle is equipped with either a brush type slip ring or a clockspring type slip ring. Removal and installation procedures for the two types are the same except where noted.
Whenever the steering column is separated from the steering gear for any reason, the steering column must be locked to prevent the steering wheel from being rotated, which in turn will prevent damage to the air bag slip ring.
