Glove Compartment Door - Hard Closing/Loose
Article No. 86-21 -2TRIM - INTERIOR - GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR - HARD CLOSING/LOOSE
FORD 1982-87 CONTINENTAL
The glove compartment door may be hard to close and/or loose when in the closed position. This may be corrected by installing a rubber shim and new screws with large washers to reduce the flexing of the latch assembly. Use the following procedure:
1. Remove the finish panel above the glove compartment door (snaps off).
2. Remove latch assembly and discard old screws.
NOTE: A shim is now being attached to all production and service parts. However, until the old service stock is used up, it will be necessary when installing a new latch assembly to check for the presence of the shim. If the shim is not attached, the following procedure should be followed before installing the new latch assembly.
Figure 3:
3. Fabricate a shim 1/8 inch to 3/16 inch thick x 3/4 inch long from any hard rubber material (recommend shim be cut from standard heater hose). Mount the shim to the glove compartment latch with glue at location shown in Figure 3.
4. Obtain (2) new mounting screws, N802371-S40, and install latch assembly.
