A/T - Overdrive in 2nd Gear and Lockout/Binds in 1st
TSB 86-51 (Oct)SUBJECT: FORD AOD
PROBLEM:
Second gear starts in overdrive, and overdrive lockout. Transmission binds-up in "1" (first gear). (Fig. A.)
CAUSE:
Intermediate clutch pack too tight -- may have wrong intermediate clutch pressure plate -- intermediate clutch may have too many clutch discs.
Note
Vehicles equipped with 4.2L (255 C.I.D), 4.9L (300 C.I.D.), 5.0L (302 C.I.D.) and 5.8L (351 C.I.D.) have three (3) friction plates, and three (3) steel separator plates.
Vehicles equipped with 3.8L (230 C.I.D.) have two (2) friction plates and two (2) separator plates.
Installation of the wrong thickness intermediate clutch pressure plate, (See Figure B) may cause the clutch to lock-up.
Withe the correct number of plates and the proper pressure plate -- if the clutch clearance is not within tolerance, the following size steel separator plates are available:
0.071" - 0.067"
0.081" - 0.077"
0.091" - 0.087"
0.101" - 0.097"
