MESSAGE CENTER - ERRATIC FUEL DISPLAY - "CALIFORNIA ONLY" VEHICLES
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 CONTINENTAL
Figure 3 - Article No. 85-1-5:
Some 1984 Continentals (California only) built prior to October 24, 1984, may have Circuit 359 (BK/W) wire cut at the assembly plant (Figure 3). This cut wire causes an open ground circuit at the message center module and will cause erratic fuel display readings at the instrument cluster.
The Message Center can be used to quickly identify any California Continental with improper Message Center wiring:
Enter "Self-Test" by pressing 1 /clock button and the miles/Km button simultaneously.
- press the miles/Km button
If the upper row of the display is all O's, follow the
procedure outlined below.
If the upper row of the display is all C's, then the Message Center wiring is correct.
Figure 3 - Article No. 85-1-5:
This condition can be corrected by connecting the cut wire (Figure 3) (Circuit 359 BK/W) between pin 11 and pin 13 with a butt connector. For access to this wire, lift the crash pad and service the wire rather than removing the message center module.
