ENGINE CRANKCASE (2.4L DIESEL)
- REVISED DIAGNOSTIC PRESSURE CHECK - SHOP MANUAL REVISION
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 CONTINENTAL, MARK VII
The engine crankcase pressure diagnostic check is incomplete in the 1984 Car Shop Manual, Section 31- 31, Step EPC-8, and page 47 of the training manual. The following procedure should be applied whenever diagnostic routines are performed.
Crankcase pressure is checked at the oil fill hole in the valve cover using the oil cap adapter (Figure 13) and 0-60 inch H2O magnehelic gauge from Rotunda model 019-00022 or equivalent. The maximum allowable pressure here is 30 inches H2O at 3300 rpm. A reading exceeding this indicates cylinder leakage past the rings.
1. Connect the adapter (Figure 13) as outlined in the manufacturer's instructions.
Figure 14 - Underhood Component Layout:
2. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube from the elbow on the air cleaner.
3. Plug the line with a suitable plug and lightly tighten the clamp (Figure 14, View A).
4. Loosen the clamp and remove the hose from the vacuum pump fitting (Figure 14, View B).
5. Cover the vacuum pump fitting with a suitable vacuum port cover.
6. Make sure the dipstick is securely sealed in the dipstick tube.
7. Bring the engine up to normal operating temperature.

8. Take the engine up to 3300 rpm's under no load and note the pressure reading (Step 4 above, Figure 13).
9. Remove all test equipment and plugs.
10. Reconnect the vacuum pump hose and the engine ventilation tube.
11. Secure the hose clamps.
