LIGHTS - HEADLIGHT ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 MARK VII

The headlamp adjustment for the aerodynamically designed (AERO) headlamps outlined below is being issued to supplement the procedures contained in Section 32-02 of the 1984 Car Shop Manual.

To aim the Mark VII aerodynamically (AERO) styled headlamps, the aimer adapters provided in Rotunda Headlamp Kit (088-00001) must be substituted with the specially designed aimer adapters included in headlamp adjustment kit ( - -) or equivalent which is located in the luggage compartment.

NOTE: Hopkins B4-A aimers may also be used with the specially designed aimer adapters.

All headlamp adjustments should be made under the following conditions:

^ Half full tank of gas plus or minus one gallon, the vehicle unloaded and the trunk empty, except for the spare tire and jacking equipment.
^ Recommended pressure in all tires, per label on door post.
^ Proper vehicle height. To ensure proper vehicle height the air suspension must be activated prior to aiming the headlamps. To activate the suspension system turn the ignition to the "on" position for at least five (5) seconds, then, turn the ignition to the "off" position.

NOTE: To ensure the air suspension system does not bleed down, all occupant doors must be closed while the headlamps are being adjusted.

^ The equipment in Kit 088-00001 or equivalent can be calibrated to accomodate a slight slope in the floor, making it usable almost any place in the garage. However, the area must be reasonably flat.
^ Consult the aimer instruction manual for operating procedure. Use established headlamp aim specifications for type two (2) single headlamps.

Headlamp Aimer Adapter Installation/Headlamp Adjustment

1. Clean the headlamp lenses and aiming pads. Refer to Figure 24, View A.
2. Inspect the aimer adapter suction cups and clean with solvent, if necessary. (Figure 24, View C).
3. Each aimer adapter is identified as left or right hand as shown in Figure 24, View C.
4. Firmly insert the R.H. aimer into the R.H. adapter after aligning the long rib in the adapter with the top slot on the aimer as shown in Figure 24, View A. The aimer will snap into position in the adapter when properly installed.
5. Position R.H. aimer/adapter to R.H. headlamp by visually aligning the three pockets in the adapter to the headlamp lens aiming pads. Refer to Figure 24, View B.
6. Secure the aimer/adapter to the headlamp by pushing the aimer towards the headlamp until the adapter contacts all three aiming pads. Push the piston handle forward as far as it will go, and then quickly pull the piston handle back until it locks in place.
7. Visually check the installation to insure that all three headlamp aiming pads are contacting the pockets in the adapter as shown in Figure 24, View B. If any of the aiming pads are not contacting the adapter, repeat Steps 5 and 6.
8. Repeat Steps 4 through 7 for the L.H. aimer/adapter.

9. Rotate the headlamp aiming adjustment screws clockwise/counterclockwise as required to achieve proper headlamp aim (Figure 25).

NOTE: Do not use the upper outboard headlamp pivot screw to aim the headlamp. The pivot screw is used to accomplish the following:

^ Provide a pivot for the headlamp when the horizontal and/or the vertical adjustment screw is rotated.
^ Provide an adjustment at time of lamp installation to achieve a relatively flush appearance between the headlamp and parking lamp assemblies.
