Article No. 85-5-7

HEATER - DISCHARGE AIR TO FLOOR COOLER THAN AIR FROM INSTRUMENT PANEL REGISTERS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 CONTINENTAL AND MARK VII

Discharge heater air to the floor that is cooler than the upper level discharge air after in-car set temperature has been reached may be caused by an improper mix of air in the plenum. A baffle kit has been released to service this condition.

PROCEDURE:
To service this condition, use the following baffle kit and procedure.

1. Set the control assembly for MIX and the temperature at 60, then remove the evaporator case assembly as outlined in TSB 84-25-1, dated 12/5/84.

2. Remove the floor duct (3 screws).

3. Remove the heater core cover (5 screws) and disengage the wire harness tab from the cover (Figure 11).
4. Remove the heater core from the evaporator case.

5. Remove the panel air door from the door shaft (1 screw). Use care not to damage the electric actuator.

6. Looking through the panel air door opening of the evaporator case, locate the vertical rib on the partition between the heater core area and the panel door. Then, with a saw and a hot knife, cut and remove the partition between the vertical rib, the top of the case, and the dash panel side of the case (Figure 12). DO NOT REMOVE THE VERTICAL RIB.

7. Position air baffle No. 1 (Figure 13) in the evaporator case through the panel air door opening as shown in Figure 14. Drill two 3/16 inch holes in the case using the holes in the baffle as a pilot for locating the holes.

8. Secure baffle No. 1 in the evaporator case with two
(2) of the short pop rivets supplied in the service kit. The rivets should be installed from the outside of the case so the expanded part of the rivet is against the baffle.

9. Position air baffle No. 2 (Figure 13) to the evaporator case as shown in Figure 16). The bend of baffle No. 2 should be flush with the end of the molded baffle.

10. Drill two (2) 3/16 inch holes in the molded baffle from inside the case with two (2) of the short rivets supplied in the kit. (Figure 15).

11. Rivet the baffle to the molded baffle from inside the case with two (2) of the short rivets supplied in the kit (Figure 15).

12. Position baffle No. 3 (Figure 13) in the case plenum as shown in Figure 16. The bend of baffle No. 3 must be positioned over the vertical rib in the case next to the cut-out made in Step 5.
13. Using baffle No. 3 as a template, drill two (2) 3/16 inch holes to attach the baffle to the case. Then install the baffle using the two (2) long rivets supplied in the service kit. A flat washer with 3/16 inch hole must be used on the expanded ends of the rivets to prevent the rivets from pulling through the case.

14. Install the new panel air door from the service kit in the evaporator case and secure with one screw.

15. Install the floor duct (3 screws).

16. Install the heater core and the heater core cover. Be sure the harness clips and harness tab are located as shown in Figure 11.
17. Install the evaporator case assembly in the vehicle as outlined in TSB 84-25-1. Be sure the plenum to evaporator case seal is correctly positioned to prevent air leakage caused by bad alignment at the seal.
