HEATER - INSUFFICIENT HEATING COMFORT IN DRIVER AND PASSENGER FLOOR AREAS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 MARK VII, CONTINENTAL

Concerns of cold feet after selected EATC system temperature has stabilized may occur when discharge air is directed to the floor position and the outside ambient air temperature ranges from 30-50 ~F.

This concern is caused by the blend door actuator calibration which allows cooler air out of the floor ducts after stabilization.

Service Procedure:

Air flow can be redirected off the driver's feet by adding an air deflector to the lower left side of the heater floor
duct (Figures 6 and 7). Also, recalibrating the blend door actuator will provide warmer air temperatures (Figure 8).
Calibration Procedures

Prior to performing the recalibration of the blend door actuator, check for cold air leaks from the evaporator case and dash panel. This can be accomplished by passing your hand over the sealed area between the blower assembly and evaporator assembly, when the blower is operating in the HI position. Seal any leaks as necessary, then proceed with calibration procedures.

Access to Actuator

1. Disconnect negative (ground) cable from battery.
2. Remove sound shield beneath instrument panel at glove box (two screws).
3. Remove glove box (one screw additional to Step 2 and two retaining straps - Continental).
4. Remove shield behind glove box (seven screws).
5. Disconnect electrical connector for glove box lamp.
6. Remove ash tray (Continental only).
7. Remove instrument panel radio/ash tray bezel (four screws Continental or snap-in clips Mark VII).
8. Remove radio (four screws).
9. Disconnect radio electrical connectors and antenna lead.

10. Remove actuator cover three screws (Figure 8).
Calibration

1. Scribe a mark on the plastic actuator around the right side mounting screw. This will serve as a reference point (Figure 8).
2. Loosen the three actuator mounting screws.
3. Move the actuator along the slotted holes to the right 1/16 inch and tighten the mounting screws. Verify 1/16 inch movement after tightening screws (Figure 8).
4. If warmer discharge temperatures are desired, move the actuator an additional 1/16 inch to the right.
