Radio - High Frequency Noise In AM Band

84ford13 Article No. 84-14-5

RADIO - HIGH FREQUENCY NOISE IN AM BAND AT APPROXIMATELY 600 KHZ

FORD 1984-85 MARK VII AND CONTINENTAL

The subject vehicles may exhibit a low volume high frequency tone in radios on the AM band at approximately 600 KHZ. This tone, if present, can only be heard in weak station areas and may not be caused by the radio. The tone may be caused by the electronic instrument cluster.

To check for cluster to radio interference, turn the key to the "ACC" position and tune the radio to the appropriate AM station where the high frequency tone is heard. Then pull the instrument cluster fuse (fuse #17). If the tone is eliminated by this procedure, the subject instrument cluster should be removed from the vehicle and replaced with a new service cluster which has been designed to eliminate this concern. If the tone is still present with fuse #17 pulled, it will be necessary to refer to Section 35-01 of the Shop Manual for further radio diagnosis.
