Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect under hood lamp wiring connector.
3. Scribe hinge mark locations, then remove hood.
4. Drain cooling system and oil pan, then remove air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove fan shroud attaching bolts, then the fan shroud.
6. Remove cooling fan, then disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses.
7. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines, then remove radiator.
8. Discharge A/C system, then disconnect hoses from compressor. Plug hoses to prevent dirt entry.
9. Disconnect muffler inlet pipe.
10. Disconnect vacuum hoses and wiring harnesses that will interfere with engine removal.
11. Disconnect engine oil cooler lines.
12. Disconnect accelerator cable and fuel line from injection pump.
13. Disconnect transmission shift linkage.
14. Disconnect ground cable at engine.
15. Remove coolant expansion bottle and position aside.
16. Disconnect heater hoses at dash panel.
17. Disconnect electrical lead at A/C compressor.
18. Disconnect power steering pump and position aside.
19. Disconnect fuel lines from injectors.
20. Disconnect instrument panel wiring harness.
21. Install engine support tool D79F-6000-A or equivalent, then raise and support vehicle.
22. Remove muffler inlet pipe, then the engine oil cooler bracket and brace.
23. Remove stabilizer bar bracket attaching bolts and position stabilizer bar forward.
24. Remove left fender splash shield, then disconnect steering column shaft coupling from steering gear.
25. Remove engine mount insulator retaining nuts, then raise engine with suitable jack.
26. Position steering gear, as necessary, then lower engine.
27. Remove converter housing cover, then the converter to drive plate retaining nuts. Position locking pliers in housing to support converter.
28. Remove crossmember retaining nuts, then the transmission shift lever bellcrank.
29. Raise transmission with suitable jack, then remove crossmember retaining bolts.
30. Lower transmission, then remove engine to converter housing retaining bolts.
31. Reinstall crossmember retaining bolts, then lower vehicle.
32. Install suitable engine lifting equipment, then remove engine support tool.
33. Lift engine and remove from vehicle.
34. Reverse procedure to install.
