A/T - AOD Rebuild Tips

TSB 86-7 (Feb)

SUBJECT: FORD AOD

Valve body must be installed and properly torqued. Governor must be removed from counterweight.

Slowly blow air into lower governor hole in counterweight, as in Figure # 1. 1-2 and 2-3 shift valves can be seen moving. As air is slowly applied, the 1-2 shift valve should move first. The 2-3 shift valve should move next. Watch for slow & free movement of each valve and for correct order.

The 3-4 shift valve can seldom, if ever, be seen. Block the 1-2 and 2-3 shift valves with screwdrivers after they have shifted, and then the 3-4 shift valve can be heard when it shuttles.

Watch for leaks between valve body and case. Two gaskets between separator and case may be necessary. Some leakage will occur around the orifice control plug (Figure 1). If a lot of pressure is required to move the 3-4 shift, then it is hanging, or leakage in the governor circuit is excessive.

Routine sealing of the governor counterweight-to-output shaft is recommended. Leakage in this area is normal, but excessive leakage in other areas is often occuring. Less leakage in one area can help to overcome excessive leakage somewhere else.

Cut a thin slice of 0-ring, as in figure 2. (a 350 accumulator cover O-ring should work well) Place the slice under the driveball in the output shaft hole. If it is too thick, the counterweight can't be forced on. If it is too thin, there will still be looseness of the counterweight.
