Subject: Safety Recall 86S12 - Certain 1985 and 1986 Lincoln Continental and Lincoln Mark VII Vehicles for Replacement of the Brake Pump Motor Relay

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Certain 1985 and 1986 Lincoln Continental and Lincoln Mark VII vehicles equipped with anti-lock brake systems that were built at the Wixom Assembly Plant from the start of 1985 model production through February 28, 1986. Some 1985 model and all 1986 model vehicles were built with anti-lock brakes.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFECT:

Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists in the vehicles described above. On some of these vehicles, the brake pump motor relay may stick closed causing the pump motor to run continuously, overheat and eventually fail. If the pump stops running, the vehicle will brake normally a few times before rear brake function and power assist to the front brakes is lost. Stopping distances and brake pedal efforts required to stop the car will increase substantially. A vehicle crash could result.

Drivers will be warned of the condition before braking is affected by a red warning light on the instrument panel that says "BRAKE". Drivers should park their vehicles promptly and cautiously if the warning light turns on. Owners should then contact their dealers.

To correct this condition, a modified design relay is to be installed on each of the affected vehicles.
