NOISE - BRAKES - ANTI-LOCK PUMP OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 CONTINETAL/MARK VII

The new Anti-Lock system available on 1985 Continentals and Mark VII's is an electric pump/hydraulic system rather than the familiar steering pump/hydraulic system.

To maintain hydraulic operating pressure, the electric pump cycles on and off periodically as the brakes are used. Because of this, there may be some vehicles where the pump operation can be heard by the occupants.

Where the pump noise level is reported as "too loud", check for an out-of-position wiring harness wedged between the electric motor and the front face of dash sheet metal or a metallic accumulator shipping plug (Figure 16) lying on the pump and/or wedged between the accumulator mounting block and the master cylinder housing (re-route or remove as required).
