Bumper/Stone Deflector - Slapping/Squeaking Noise

NOISE - "SLAP/SQUEAK" - FRONT AND/OR Article No.
REAR BUMPER STONE DEFLECTOR 87-11-4
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1985-86 LINCOLN TOWN CAR
This article is being republished in it's entirety to expand the model year application.
ISSUE: A "slapping or squeaking" noise occurring in vehicles when in motion may be caused by the front and/or rear bumper stone deflector rubbing on the bumper.
ACTION: To correct this condition, apply foam tape to the underside of the stone deflector(s) using the following procedure.
Procedure For Elimination Of Front Bumper
Slap/Squeak
1. Obtain two (2) pieces of foam tape 2 feet 10 inches long each.
2. The front bumper must be removed from the vehicle.

NOTE: Before removing front bumper, scribe around the bolt washer heads onto the P.G.M. (bumper attachment) in order to record the exact location of the bumper (for re-installation) as shown in Figure 3, View B.
3. Remove front bumper. (See Shop Manual, Section 47-05-2 and 3 for removal instructions.)
4. Clean the bottom surface of the right hand and left hand stone deflectors with Glass Cleaner.
5. Apply foam tape to each stone deflector as shown in Figure 3, View A (Section A).
NOTE: The tape must be applied to the entire surface shown.
6. Cut off and discard surplus foam tape.
7. Install front bumper onto vehicle by positioning bumper so that the bolt heads are aligned with the scribe marks on the P.G.M.
8. Road test vehicle in order to determine that slap/squeak has been eliminated.
Procedure For Elimination Of Rear Bumper
Slap/Squeak
1. Obtain two (2) pieces of foam tape 4 feet long each.
2. The rear bumper must be removed from the vehicle.

NOTE: Before removing the rear bumper, scribe around the bolt washer heads onto the P.G.M. in order to record the exact location of the bumper as shown in Figure 4, View B.
3. Remove rear bumper. (See Shop Manual, Section 47-05-4 for removal instructions.)
4. Clean the bottom surface of the rear stone deflector with Glass Cleaner.
5. Apply foam tape to the stone deflector by starting at the center of the deflector with each piece of tape, as shown in Figure 4, View A (Section A).
6. Cut off and discard surplus foam tape.
7. Install rear bumper onto vehicle by positioning bumper so that the bolt heads are aligned with the scribe marks on the P.G.M.
8. Road test vehicle in order to determine that slap/squeak has been corrected.
