Vinyl Roof - Pulling Away From Back Window
Article No. 85-25-1EXTERIOR TRIM - VINYL ROOF - PULLS OUT AROUND "FRENCHED" BACK WINDOW OPENING
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 LINCOLN TOWN CAR
Vehicles on which the vinyl roof cover is pulled out from around the back window opening may not have had sufficient adhesive bond during assembly, or the "skull cap" is contaminated so that the vinyl roof does not have normal adhesion.
This condition can be corrected, without replacement of the vinyl roof cover, using the following procedure:
Two easily fabricated/modified tools are required.
A. "Fishing" Tool This tool is used to pull the roof cover ends out from under the "skull cap". It can be made from a short length of stiff wire (heavy coat hanger) about eight inches long. Put a one-half inch long, ninety degree (90~) bend on one end to form a hook. Bend back about two inches of the other end to form a handle and wrap it with tape so that the wire end will not cause hand injury. File, or using emery cloth, smooth the wire "hook" end so that it will not scratch the glass or pierce the roof cover.
B. "Tuck" Tool This tool is a modified, oneor two-inch wide putty knife. It must have the cutting edges "rounded" and the corners "blunted" so that it will not damage either the glass or roof cover.
Procedure
1. The vinyl roof adhesive (part no. D9AZ-19C525-A) label instructions should be followed. Brush on a thin, uniform coating. Spread only as much as can be bonded within five minutes.

2. Stretch the roof cover back in place, pulling and hand rubbing out wrinkles. Tuck the cover ends back under the "skull cap" and then push them up onto the underside of the "skull cap" making sure that ends adhere. (Refer to Figure 1.)
3. Work around the periphery of the "frenched" back window opening. Do small areas at a time to eliminate problems "too dry" adhesive.
4. When the roof cover ends have all been smoothed back in place (no wrinkles), seal the small opening between the glass and "folded under" roof cover with black silicone rubber (part no. D6AZ-19562-B - 3 oz. tube). Seal only the corners, sides, and the lower opening.
