The in-tank fuel pump-to-mounting flange hose on vehicles built between January 28 and March 1, 1986 may weaken and leak causing loss of or low fuel pressure (10-25 psi).
No start, slow start, rough idle and low engine power conditions may be caused by this split fuel pump hose inside the fuel tank. A service hose of improved quality is available for replacement.
1. Check fuel pressure, according to the instructions in Section 24-35 of the Shop Manual.
2. If the fuel pressure is low (25 psi or less), drop the fuel tank and check the electric fuel pump hose. The damaged area will most likely show a protruding white fiber, which is the hose reinforcing braid.
3. Replace the damaged hose with a new service replacement hose.
NOTE:
^ DO NOT use standard fuel hose for replacement purposes. The exterior surfaces of the hose are not designed for continuous immersion in gasoline and will deteriorate, causing a repeat repair.
^ If the original fuel pump sleeve and filter are allowed to air-dry for more than 24 hours, they will harden and require replacement. Reinstall the pump and the filler cap on the gas tank while waiting for service parts.
