Subject: Safety Recall 86S13 - Certain 1986 Lincoln Continental and Lincoln Mark VII Vehicles for Replacement of the Ignition Lock Cylinders
VEHICLES INVOLVED:
Certain 1986 Lincoln Continental and Lincoln Mark VII Vehicles built at the Wixom Assembly Plant from October 3, 1985 through April 1, 1986.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFECT:
Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists in the vehicles described above. On some of these vehicles, the ignition switch may stick or bind between the "START" and "ON" position preventing the ignition switch from fully returning to the "ON" position after the engine is started. Should the switch stick, the engine will run, but several electrical systems may not work, including the power supply to the brake pump motor. Without this motor operating, loss of rear brake function and power assist to the front brakes will result. Stopping distances and brake pedal efforts will increase substantially. A vehicle crash could result.
Drivers will be warned of the condition before braking is affected by the illumination of a red "BRAKE" warning light on the instrument panel. Drivers should park their vehicles promptly and cautiously if the warning light turns on. After stopping and parking the vehicle, the engine may be restarted, making sure that the key returns fully from "START" to "ON" position. If the red brake warning light turns off after its initial illumination during startup, the brake pump motor is functioning properly. The vehicle can be driven so long as the red brake warning light is not illuminated. The car should be brought promptly to a dealer for the recall service.
To correct this condition, a revised design ignition lock cylinder is to be installed on each of the affected vehicles.
