^ LAMPS - REAR - LAMP AND REFLECTOR ASSEMBLIES - 1990 LEVEL RETROFITTING PROCEDURE

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-89 CONTINENTAL
ISSUE: The rear reflectors (decklid mounted) may warp on cars operated primarily in high ambient temperatures. This occurs because of the design and type of plastic material used in the reflector.
ACTION: Install a 1990 level design rear reflector assembly and matching rear lamp assemblies. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
Figure 1:
1. Replace both the RH and LH rear lamp assemblies to match the appearance of the new 1990 rear reflector assembly. Refer to the 1990 Continental Shop Manual, section 32-20 for service details.
2. Remove the interior trim panel to expose the six (6) nuts and two (2) screws holding the rear reflector assembly.
3. Remove the six (6) nuts and two (2) screws.
4. Remove the two (2) exterior screws holding the reflector to the decklid.
5. Remove the rear reflector assembly.
6. Obtain a new 1990 rear reflector assembly. Carefully cut off the two tabs at the top of the the license plate mounting area, Figure 1.
NOTE: DO NOT USE A 1988/89 DESIGN REAR REFLECTOR ASSEMBLY FOR THIS CAR BECAUSE IT MAY RESULT IN A REPEAT REPAIR.
7. Position the new rear reflector assembly to the decklid.
8. Install the interior six (6) retaining nuts and two
(2) screws.
9. Install the trim panel cover.
10. Install the two (2) exterior screws.
