Shift Cable - Whirring Noise In Passenger Compartment
^ NOISE - "WHIRRING" - HEARD IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT DURING 10-40 MPH DRIVING SPEED
^ TRANSAXLE - AXOD - SHIFT CABLE BRACKET DISTORTED
Article No. 89-20-8
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1989 CONTINENTAL
ISSUE: A "whirring" noise may be heard in the passenger compartment while driving 10-40 MPH (16-64 km/H). This noise is usually caused by:
^ An interference of the steering column to the instrument panel substructure
^ Tight-angled routing of the transmission shift cable caused by a distorted shift cable bracket
ACTION: If service is required, use the following service procedure to eliminate the "whirring" noise.
1. Inspect all of the dash panel grommets to be sure they are installed properly and are not mislocated or torn. Reinstall or repair as required.
2. Check for any interference of the steering column assembly to the instrument panel substructure. Re-center the column if interference is found. Refer to the 1989 Continental Car Shop Manual, Section 13-04 for service details.
Figure 1:
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the engine to gain access to the transmission shift cable and cable bracket located on the transmission housing.
4. Remove the transmission shift cable from the shift cable bracket.
5. Remove and throw away the two (2) bolts holding the cable bracket to the transmission housing, Figure 1. Remove the one (1) nut and save it for reuse later.
6. Remove the shift cable bracket. Replace it with a new bracket (E90Y-7B229-A).
7. Position the new shift cable bracket on the transmission. Install two (2) new bolts (N606689-S103) and the existing nut, saved in Step # 5, see Figure 1.
8. Tighten the bolts and nut to a torque of 10-20 lb.ft. (13.6-27 N-m).
9. Re-install the transmission shift cable onto the cable bracket. Refer to the 1989 Continental Car Shop, Section 17-02 for service details.
10. Re-install the air cleaner assembly.
