SAFETY RECALL (89S61)
1989 CONTINENTAL-REAR SEAT BELT AND RETRACTOR ATTACHMENT
TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Open trunk.
2. Snap out three push pins which hold in the trunk liner.
3. Pull liner down away from package tray.
4. Remove left quarter trim panel.
5. From the left hand side of vehicle, reach under package tray through trunk opening and search for the anchor bolt (389370-S101) which attaches the rear belt and retractor to the package tray extension. Refer to Attachment IV.
6. Inspect for proper anchor bolt installation by feeling if the bolt is threaded through the package tray extension and weld nut.
7. If the bolt is felt through the weld nut, reinstall package tray and left quarter trim panel. Close trunk.
8. If the bolt is not through the package tray extension and weld nut, follow steps 9-21.
9. Remove rear seat back and seat cushion assemblies. Refer to 1989 Continental Shop Manual, Section 41-14.
10. Remove "C" pillar trim panel.
11. Remove child restraint tether attachment, if so equipped. Refer to 1989 Continental Shop Manual, Section 41-52.
12. Remove push pins retaining package tray trim panel. Refer to 1989 Continental Shop Manual, Section 45-21.
13. Lift corner of trim panel by pulling panel forward and slightly upward from package tray.
14. Insert anchor bolt 389370-S101 through retractor tab and tighten to 30-43 N-m (22-32 ft.lbs.). See Attachment 1V. Make sure spacer is located between retractor and package tray.
15. Position trim panel to package tray and install retaining push pins.
16. Install "C" pillar trim panel.
17. Install child restraint tether attachment, if so equipped.
18. Install rear seat back and cushion assemblies.
19. Install left quarter trim panel.
20. Position trunk liner to package tray and secure with the three push pins.
21. Close trunk.
