GAUGE - FUEL - REPLACEMENT, TRIPMINDER/FUEL ANTI-SLOSH MODULE MODIFICATION AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE - LSC MODELS


LINCOLN-MERCURY : 1986-90 MARK VII


ISSUE: A new combination tripminder/fuel anti-slosh module (F0LY-14B064-B) is now available for service replacement of tripminder module (E6LY-14B064-A). The new module must be modified slightly when used as a direct replacement for the older design modules.

ACTION: If service is required, modify and install combination tripminder/fuel anti-slosh module (F0LY-14B064-B) as a replacement for tripminder module (E6LY-14B064-A). Refer to the following procedure for service details.


NOTE: MODULE (F0LY-14B064-B) INCLUDES ANTI-SLOSH CIRCUITY THAT CAN BE INCORPORATED INTO 1989 AND 1990 MODELS. IF IT IS DESIRABLE TO ADD THIS FUNCTION, DO NOT MODIFY THE MODULE AS DESCRIBED BELOW. REFER TO TSB 90-24-8 FOR COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS.

1. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to the 1986-90 Mark VII Shop Manual, Section 33-01, for removal procedure.

2. Remove the screw attaching the original tripminder module to the instrument cluster backplate. Remove the tripminder module.

NOTE: IF THE FUEL INDICATION ANTI-SLOSH FEATURE IS TO BE INCORPORATED (APPLICABLE TO 1989 AND 1990 MODULES ONLY), DO NOT PERFORM STEP # 3. REFER TO TSB 90-24-8 FOR COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS.


3. Modify the replacement tripminder/fuel anti-slosh module.

a. Using appropriate wire cutters, clip the RED and BLACK wires on the module at alternate lengths and as close to the epoxy on the printed circuit board as possible.

b. Be sure to cut the wires so they cannot contact each other or any other current-carrying components.

c. Discard the wire and snap-terminal connector.

4. Install the tripminder/fuel anti-slosh module to the back of the instrument cluster. Secure it using the original attaching screws.

5. Install the instrument cluster. Refer to the 1986-90 Mark VII Shop Manual, Section 33-01, for installation procedure.


6. Check for proper operation of the tripminder, fuel gauge and other instrument cluster functions.
