^ WINDNOISE - "WHISTLING" FROM GRILLE AREA
Article No. 88-19-1
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-89 LINCOLN TOWN CAR
ISSUE: A "tea kettle" type whistling noise from the front of the vehicle when driving at high speeds or into a strong wind may be caused by the shape of the grille bars.

ACTION: Modify the grille by adding three (3) pieces of vacuum hose on the backside of the grille. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE GRILLE FROM THE VEHICLE.

1. Obtain a roll of vacuum hose, DOPZ-12226-C.

2. Cut three (3) lengths from the roll. One length 20 inches, one length 24 inches and one length either 22 inches for 1988 model year vehicles or 17-1/2 inches for 1989 model year vehicles.

3. Slit the three (3) pieces of hose on the side opposite the identification markings from endto-end. Slicing the hoses on this side will make sure the identification markings will not show through the grille.

4. Apply a bead of black silicone rubber, (D6AZ-19562-BA) on the inside of each piece of hose from end-to-end.
5. Clean the backside of the grille with wax and grease remover.

6. Install the three (3) pieces of hose on the backside of the grille as shown in Figure 1.

7. Tape the ends of the hoses to the grille to make sure they stay in position while the silicone cures.

8. Remove the tape after the three (3) hour cure time.

9. Adjust the hood to grille opening panel GOP seal, if required.
