FORD: 1989-90 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1989-90 GRAND MARQUIS, TOWN CAR

ISSUE: No overdrive or an extended 3-4 shift may be caused by design changes made to the separator plate. The condition may be accompanied with a "Bump" feel at the end of the shift or no overdrive. Service tag build dates are between C-30 and J-5.

ACTION: If service is required, use the following diagnostic and service procedure. Refer to the appropriate 1989/1990 Car Shop Manual, Section 17-20 for service details including transmisson cleaning procedures.

1. Remove the transmission oil pan.

2. Check for excessive solids or material specks in the fluid.

3. Observe color and odor of the fluid. Look for any indication of overheating or clutch disc and band failure.

4. If none of these conditions are found, install a new separator plate and 3-4 shuttle valve contained in Transmission Separator Plate Kit (E9AZ-7A008-A).

5. If the fluid color and odor indicate an overheating condition, install the following components.

^ Overdrive Band (E0AZ-7F196-A)

^ Transmission Separator Plate Kit (E9AZ-7A008-A)

^ Transmission Overhaul Kit (E4AZ-7C391-A)

6. Replace the Reverse Drum (E9TZ-7D044-B) if its surface shows signs of scoring from a worn band condition.
