NOISE-"POP"-IN AM RADIO WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED

RADIO-AM-NOISE WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED

Article No. 89-16-10

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-89 CONTINENTAL, TOWN CAR

Figure 1:

ISSUE: A "pop" sound may be heard when the radio is tuned to the AM band and the brakes are applied or released. This is caused by a high current noise which is generated when the high-mount stoplamp circuitry is activated or turned off.

ACTION: Modify the high-mount stoplamp ground circuit (# 57) by using the following service procedure.

1. Cut the existing (# 57) ground circuit(s) at the high-mount stoplamp, leaving about 6" to 8" length of wire, Figure 1.

2. Remove the insulation from the wire.

3. Attach a solderless terminal or equivalent.

4. Drill a hole with a # 22 drill in the package tray in the immediate area of the high-mount stoplamp assembly. This hole will serve as a pilot for a # 10-32 self-tapping screw which will be used to secure the solderless terminal.

Figure 2:

CAUTION: USE CARE WHILE DRILLING THE PACKAGE TRAY ASSEMBLY SO THAT THE WIRE ASSEMBLY LOCATED BELOW WILL NOT BE DAMAGED.

5. Attach the terminal to the package tray using a # 10-32 self-tapping screw, Figure 2.

6. Operate the brakes to activate the high-mount stoplamp. Check to see that "pop" noise is eliminated or reduced.
