NOISE-HEARD IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT COMING FROM FUEL PUMP-VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 1/31/89

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987-89 GRAND MARQUIS, TOWN CAR

ISSUE: A noise heard in the passenger compartment may be coming from the electric fuel pump inside the fuel tank. The fuel tank may be contacting the underbody of the vehicle which causes fuel pump operational noise to be amplified and transmitted into the passenger compartment.

ACTION: Install a fuel tank isolator kit to eliminate fuel pump noise from being heard in the passenger compartment. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank.

2. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate model year Car Shop Manual, Volume D, Section 24-50 for service details.

3. Remove and throw away both of the existing fuel tank straps and attaching hardware.

4. Clean the side of the fuel tank that faces toward the vehicle underbody. Use Ford Extra-Strength Spot and Stain Remover B7A-19521-AA.

5. Attach the two (2) rubber isolators contained in the kit to the side of the fuel tank that faces toward the vehicle underbody, Figure 1.

6. Drill an 11 mm diameter hole in each fuel tank support member as follows:

a. Locate the center of the new hole 10 mm forward of the existing hole in each fuel tank support, Figure 2.

b. Center punch and drill a pilot hole to make sure of correct hole alignment.

c. Drill an 11 mm diameter hole through the pilot hole.

7. Insert the new "J"-nut stud assemblies contained in the kit through the "J"-nut insertion holes, Figure 3.

8. Align the threaded section of each "J"-nut with the new holes drilled in Step 6.

9. Install the new fuel tank support straps contained in the kit onto the vehicle underbody pivot mounts.

10. Reinstall the fuel tank. Refer to the appropriate model year Car Shop Manual, Volume D, Section 24-50 for service details.

NOTE: USE NEW STUD AND NUT ASSEMBLIES N801111-S190 TO INSTALL THE FUEL TANK ON LINCOLN TOWN CARS. USE NEW STUDS N801070-S190 AND NUTS N800627-S190 TO INSTALL THE FUEL TANK ON CROWN VICTORIA AND GRAND MARQUIS UNITS. THIS ATTACHING HARDWARE IS INCLUDED IN THE FUEL TANK ISOLATOR KIT.
