FORD: 1989 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1989 GRAND MARQUIS, TOWN CAR

LIGHT TRUCK: 1985-89 AEROSTAR

ISSUE: The design of the plastic rear axle cover makes it difficult to remove all of the old liquid gasket material. As a result, leaks could occur if the original cover is reinstalled after an axle repair. The affected vehicles that have plastic rear axle cover are:

^ 1985-89 Aerostar equipped with the 7.5 Inch axle.

^ 1989 Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Town Car equipped with the 8.8 inch axle.

ACTION: To prevent leaks, a new plastic axle cover must be installed. The old cover should be thrown away whenever it is removed from the axle assembly. Refer to the appropriate model and year Shop Manual, Section 15 for rear axle cover removal and installation details.

NOTE: NEVER ATTEMPT TO REPAIR A LEAKING OR DAMAGED PLASTIC REAR AXLE COVER. ALWAYS REPLACE THE COVERS WITH A NEW COVER.
