DECKLID - POWER PULL-DOWN - INOPERATIVE

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1988-94 CONTINENTAL
1988-96 TOWN CAR

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include 1994 through 1996 model years and to update the part numbers.

ISSUE:
An inoperative Decklid Power Pull-Down may be the result of an inoperative power pull-down switch.

ACTION:
Replace the power pull-down switch if it is found to be defective. Do not replace the entire power pull-down assembly; a service switch is available as a separate part. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

SWITCH - DIAGNOSIS/REMOVAL

1. Remove carpeting surrounding the pull-down unit.

2. Disconnect harness connector from switch (Figure 3).








NOTE:
FOR PROPER DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURES, REFER TO FIGURES 1 AND 2 (POWER PULL-DOWN DIAGNOSIS CHARTS).





3. Remove the switch retaining screw with a T-15 TORX bit (Figure 3).

4. Gently pry on the locking tab and lift switch assembly from pull-down unit (Figure 3).

a. Rock switch slightly side-to-side to clear metal reinforcement plate, if necessary.

SWITCH - INSTALLATION

1. Operate motor to position the striker at the open position.

a. Position toggle switch up on new unit to match position of striker. This will assure that the toggle will be positioned between the two (2) tabs on the striker when installed (Figure 3).

2. Position switch assembly to pull-down unit and push down until locking tab snaps into the locked position (Figure 3).

NOTE:
THE ALIGNMENT TAB ON THE SWITCH FITS INTO A GROOVE ON THE PULL-DOWN UNIT.

3. Install the TORX head screw and tighten to 1-2.5 N-m (9-22 lb-in) (Figure 3).

4. Install electrical connector (Figure 3).

5. Check pull-down unit operation.

6. Install carpeting around pull-down unit.
