SUSPENSION - AIR - "RIDE CONTROL" DIAGNOSIS INFORMATION

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-90 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE: In some cases the Continental suspension fault codes have been lost because the technician was not aware that turning the ignition switch "ON" resets the memory of the module. This erases all the stored codes generated during the last period of vehicle operation.

ACTION: Use one of the following precautionary steps prior to performing diagnostics to determine the correct service action.

If the "Ride Control Light" comes on during vehicle operation, the suspension module will retain the fault code responsible for 55 minutes after the ignition switch is turned "OFF". Therefore, proceed to take the following action to keep from losing the fault codes.

1. If the "Ride Control Light" is still flashing periodically, drive to a convenient location to run a "Star Test" PRIOR to turning the ignition switch "OFF".

2. If the ignition switch has been turned "OFF", run the "Star Test" BEFORE the ignition switch is turned "ON" to move the vehicle or the fault code will be erased.
