LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-90 SABLE 1988-90 CONTINENTAL
ISSUE: An extended 3-4 shift with possible subsequent clutch failure or a no 3-4 shift condition may be caused by partially or fully blocked oil flow of the direct clutch piston check ball. Special care must be taken during the overhaul operation when re-assembling the direct clutch return spring over the direct clutch piston.
ACTION: Assemble the direct clutch piston and spring retainer by using the following service procedure.
Figure 1:
1. After installing the inner and outer lip seals on the piston, install the piston into the cylinder using seal protector T86P-70234-A.
2. Make sure that the notch in the spring bottom retainer is positioned properly over the check ball so it will not restrict oil flow of the piston check ball, Figure 1.
