EXTERIOR TRIM - DECKLID - MISALIGNED AT TAIL
LIGHTS - VEHICLES WITH POWER PULLDOWN DECKLID

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1990-92 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE:
The decklid may be pulled down below the adjacent quarter panels causing the chrome trim to be misaligned at the tail lights. This occurs because the overslam bumpers eventually become distorted.

ACTION:
Replace the overslam bumpers (N806466-S) with new ones which have a larger contact surface area to resist distortion.

1. Partially remove the decklid trim around the latch area to gain access to the latch retaining screws.

2. Loosen the latch and adjust downward as necessary to reduce excessive pulldown below the quarter panels.

3. Obtain two (2) new overslam bumpers (N806466-S) which have a hard threaded area and larger contact surface to resist distortion.

4. Remove the original overslam bumpers.

5. Since the hard threads have a slightly greater pitch than the old rubber threads. the slot in the sheet metal may have to be opened up slightly.

a. Obtain a wide blade screwdriver or other suitable tool.

b. Pry the slot to widen as required to fit the new overslam bumper.

6. Adjust the overslam bumpers to obtain a good fit.
