WINDNOISE - FRONT DOOR GLASS AND/OR OUTSIDE MIRROR TRIM CAP NOT PROPERLY INSTALLED

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1988-94 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE:
Windnoise at the front door glass run or at the outside mirror may be caused by improper installation of those components.

ACTION:
inspect the glass run, mirror and mirror trim cap for proper installation/position and adjust as required. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Check the glass run next to the mirror for gaps to the door sheet metal.

2. If no gaps exist, proceed to step 12. If there are gaps, continue with Step 3.

3. Remove door trim panel.

4. Remove door inner belt weather strip.

5. Loosen the three (3) outside mirror attaching nuts but do NOT remove nuts or mirror.

6. Remove screw and washer assembly retaining the lower front leg of the door glass run retainer.

7. Carefully pull the front leg of the glass run downward to clear the molded corner of the glass run from the door sheet metal.

8. Use a wet rag (water) and apply a little water to the door sheet metal starting where the glass run molded corner fits and down to the belt line.

9. Use hand pressure to push lower leg of glass run upward into corner of door sheet metal. Confirm that run is fully flush with outside door sheet metal.

10. While applying hand pressure, install glass run onto door frame pinch weld and front retainer. Use hand pressure to fully seat run. Confirm glass run front leg is fully seated.

11. Install screw and washer assembly attaching glass leg run retainer to inner panel. Tighten to 7-11 N-m (62-97 lb.in.).

NOTE:
REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE 1988 THROUGH 1991 SERVICE MANUAL, SECTION 42-03 OR 1992 THROUGH 1994 SERVICE MANUALS, SECTION 01-11, FOR COMPLETE FRONT DOOR GLASS RUN REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES.

12. Check alignment of mirror base to glass run. There should be no more than 2.0 mm gap. Refer to Figure 1.

a. Loosen the three (3) mirror attaching nuts (if not loosened during glass run procedure).

b. Align mirror to glass run, moving it rearward and up as required to obtain the proper gap.

c. Tighten the three (3) mirror attaching nuts to 4-7 N-m (36-61 lb.in.).

13. Check the gap between the mirror trim cap and mirror housing. There should be no more than 1.0 mm between the two pieces. Refer to Figure 2.

a. If the gap is larger than 1.0 mm, squeeze the trim cap to the mirror housing, using hand pressure only, to close up the gap.

b. If the trim cap cannot be squeezed together, remove it and inspect gasket on the inside of the the trim cap. If the gasket is distorted, straighten it, if possible, or replace the trim cap (E80Y-17D742-A and/or E80Y-17D743-A).

NOTE:
SERVICE PART IS PAINT-TO-MATCH

14. Install the door inner belt weather strip.
